Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine was founded by Owners Jose Castillo, Pedro Castillo (brothers), Carlos and Felipe Arellano (Chef and brothers) The Castillo’s and Arellano’s started out in the restaurant industry as a dishwasher 23 years earlier and began to envision bringing authentic Oaxacan cuisine to New York. There’s goal – guarantee a wonderful meal with Authentic cuisine and fabulous Margaritas Serving over 40 artisanal and ancestral Mezcales and over 50 different types of tequila brands, served in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasted excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 to such wonderful and successfully home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022.
Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in south part of Mexico, Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, who’s fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous.
The menu, however, is not limited to Oaxacan cuisine. On the road to Oaxaca, you pass Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, and when you arrive in Oaxaca you taste the best of the best. The chef’s Carlos and Felipe were born and raised in Oaxaca (pronounced “was-HAH-kah”), and they harken back to many of their mother’s much-loved recipes, particularly the intricate moles they cook to perfection and the handmade corn tortillas made fresh daily. They consider their food “home gourmet,” using old-fashioned methods while serving dressed-up plates.
Mr. Castillo says of his chef partners- and best friends from childhood- “They have the passion and love to cook everything and make it feel gourmet and authentic. We love what we do, and seeing our guest leave happy is the most important thing for us.”
Our Customers Love Ruta Oaxaca
Husband and i stopped in yesterday afternoon and the food and customer service was outstanding. We both had tlayuda and they were delicious. Husband had a very delicious steak and I had octopus, both dishes were really good. Coffee flan was delicious, this restaurant exceeded our expectations. Will definitely be back.
We had an amazing meal at Ruta and can’t wait to go back. Every bite was delicious from the appetizers to the desserts. The brunch drinks are equally as good as the food and such a great deal!!
Best chicken mole enchiladas I have ever had. All cuisine done fresh and with care to presentation and flavor.
The watermelon margaritas are great! One of the best moles I have had with the braised short ribs. Our server, Cosme, was on point and very quick and attentive. Will be going back again and again.

Took a one hour ride all the way from Long Island based on a recommendation and this restaurant did not disappoint! The food was incredible and fresh and the service was fantastic. Can’t say enough positive things about this restaurant! Make sure you leave room for dessert.
Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally stopped in for brunch this past Sunday. The food was excellent – we got the shrimp flautas as an appetizer and then the mole enchiladas and chilaquiles (with chicken added) to split as our main dishes. They also had a great buy one, get one drink special and their sangria is fantastic. Service was quick and attentive as well. Will definitely be going back to try their other dishes.
